What is March 8th to China?
For the world, it is International Women’s Day. But for China, it is practically the afterthought of Girls’ Day (女生节), a new holiday that highlights women under the age of 30.
Originally a Shandong University (Jinan, China) movement in the 1990s started by university students who felt that International Women’s Day rarely paid attention to younger women, Girls’ Day has since become a national phenomenon involving events, activities, as well as university and marketing campaigns catered to younger women.
China is arguably home to some of the world’s most progressive trends in terms of women founders and CEOs, and women have founded or co-founded as much as 25% of all startups in China and 55% of new Internet businesses, according to an official white paper released in September 2015.
Allegravita client .CO, a Neustar company, saw these trends and took the opportunity last week to send their fondest wishes to China’s women entrepreneurs in the new year. Women make up a large part of the .CO executive team, who gathered together to send their holiday greetings to Chinese women via video (in Mandarin!).
To date, the video has been viewed more than 72,000 times since its posting on China’s premier video-streaming service iQiyi (爱奇艺). You can view the full video (.co域名团队向中国创业女神发来3.7女生节祝福) here.
